Davenport launches school zone speed safety program at Horizons Elementary

The City of Davenport is launching a new school zone speed safety program at Horizons Elementary School after a city speed study found nearly 200 violations over two school days.The warning period begins Sept. 21. Drivers traveling more than 10 mph over the speed limit while the school zone is active will initially receive warnings instead of fines.According to the city, a speed study recorded 199 vehicles traveling more than 10 mph above the posted limit in two days, averaging about 100 violations per school day.The school zone speed limit is 15 mph, but the study found vehicles averaged about 25 mph during school hours. The city said 15% of vehicles were traveling faster than 30 to 36 mph, depending on the day and direction.After the warning period ends, violations will carry a $100 civil penalty.
